Viola Gladys Krause, 97, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away suddenly on Monday, April 4, 2016, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND. The visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 PM, with a prayer service at 7:00, on Thursday, April 7, at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge. The funeral service honoring Viola's life will be at 1:00 PM, on Friday, April 8, in the Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Mark Manning will be officiating. The interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Breckenridge.
Viola was born on the family farm near Wyndmere, ND, on February 6, 1919, the second of seven children born to Peter and Milady (Lesovsky) Wacha. She received her secondary education at Homestead and Liberty Grove Country Schools near Wyndmere and then attended Wyndmere High School. While still a teenager, Viola served as a caregiver on several of the local farms caring for ill mothers. On November 29, 1938, at the age of 19, Viola was united in marriage to Alfred Albert Krause. She worked at the Fairway Grocery Store in Mooreton, ND, and on the Adams Farm, (now Kube Farm) before finally settling in Breckenridge. Together, Viola and Alfred started Krause Sand and Gravel, a business venture that took them through the next 54 years. She landed a job at the National Tea Grocery Store in Breckenridge and when they closed their doors 24 years later, she assumed the bookkeeping position at Krause Sand and Gravel.
Viola was a member of Breckenridge Lutheran Church and really enjoyed the visits from Pastor Mark. She found it relaxing to tend her vegetable garden and flower gardens, and experienced much joy in visiting with her sisters and friends. But her crowning glory was her daughters, Vondell and Karen.
Viola is survived by her two daughters, Vondell "Suzie" (Ed) Allen of Billings, MT and Karen Gagnier of Breckenridge, MN; her four grandchildren, Eddie (Cheri) Allen, Vickie (DJ) Martin, Shannon (Orville) Sponsel, Rhonda (Michael) Belcourt; eleven great-grandchildren, Adam Heit; Jason and Alecia Martin; Nolan, Griffin, and MaKayla Gessner; Cydny and Austin Espe; Chris, Emily, and Heather Belcourt; three sisters, Doris Gutzmer of Lidgerwood, ND, Irene Cameron of Fargo, and Evelyn Broswski of Fergus Falls, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Milady; her husband, Alfred; two brothers, Marvin and Raymond; a sister, Helen Bratten; and granddaughter, Tammy Espe.
