Verne was born on March 15, 1927, to Erick and Emma (Banken) Hanson at McCleod, ND. He graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1945, and then entered the US Army during WWII, serving his country in Germany. Following an honorable discharge from the military, Verne moved to Moline, Illinois, and began a dignified 35 year career at Alcoa. Being a gentleman and considerate man, Verne opted for an early retirement in 1982, leaving employment room for the men and women with young families. This also meant that he had the freedom to travel and pursue his hobbies. Verne enjoyed exploring different areas with his metal detector. He had a fascination with computers that began with the Commodore and continued through his latest acquisitions, the Apple Computer and IPhone. He never shied away from technology but embraced it. He got a kick out of "talking with" Siri.
Along with his brother Elder, Verne eventually moved to Breckenridge to return to his roots and to be close to family and friends. For the last year and a half, he resided at the Twin Town Villa where he made many new friends and had the chance to reconnect with two of his high school friends.
Verne is survived by his sister-in-law, Mavis Hanson of Fargo; nieces and nephews, Karen Carlson, of Lincoln, NE, Margaret (Roy) Marohl of Breckenridge; Mary (Bill) Seelhammer of Fergus Falls, MN, Becky (Al) Sadowsky of Dickinson, ND, Barbara Baldwin of DeKalb, Illinois, Carol Lindell (Martin Vann) of Charlotte, NC, Van (Polly) Hanson of Forest, Virginia, Tony Hanson of Fargo, and Andrew (Lisa) Hanson of Medina, MN; 21 great-nieces and nephews; and 36 great-great nieces and nephews.
