Ruth Marie (Alstadt) Schieb, 90, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at St. Catherine’s Living Center in Wahpeton. The visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 5:30 PM, on Friday, August 11, 2017, at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, August 12, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Breckenridge. Father Joseph Backowski will be the Celebrant. The interment will be at St. Henry’s Catholic Cemetery in Perham, MN.
Ruth Marie Schornack was born on June 12, 1927, to Martin and Helen (Gerber) Schornack in Perham, MN. Following her graduation from Perham High School, Ruth attended Valley City Teachers College in Valley City, North Dakota. She was united in marriage to Leo Alstadt at St. Henry’s Church in Perham on June 12, 1948. They farmed in that area for several years before moving to Pine River, MN, where they owned and operated a grain elevator business. Then in 1967, Ruth and Leo and their two boys, moved to Breckenridge. They owned and operated the Rock Garden Bar on Minnesota Avenue-now called Grumpy’s. Leo passed away in 1983. Ruth married Gerard Schieb of Hankinson, ND, in 1988, and he passed away in 2001. She continued to live in Breckenridge until moving to the Wahpeton Fourth Avenue Manor Apartments, in 2012. Ruth then moved into Twin Town Villa followed by the Pioneer Cottages both in Breckenridge and eventually moved into St. Catherine’s Living Center.
Ruth was a fabulous cook and took great delight in family gatherings which always included tasty meals. She loved to dance, play cards, and go for ‘joy rides’ in the car.
Ruth will be missed by her two sons, Steve (Linda Friederichs) Alstadt of Breckenridge, and Jim (Fawn) Alstadt of Wendell, MN; her two grandchildren, David (Kristin) Alstadt of St. Bonifacius, MN, and their daughter Katrina; and LeAnn (William) Holland of Manhattan, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Ruth is preceded in death by her first husband, Leo and her second husband, Gerard; two sisters, Marie Fridgen and Helen Renner; and a brother, William Schornack.
