Roy V. Hanson, 90, of Breckenridge, MN, died October 18, 2007 at St. Francis Home in Breckenridge.
Roy Victor Hanson was born May 8, 1917 in Louis, Minnesota, the son of Thorvald and Sena (Lone) Hanson. He grew up near Bemidji, MN and had the distinction of being recognized in Ripley's "Believe it or Not" as an individual who had gone through eight grades of school never having a classmate. The first six grades he went to a log school house that was heated with wood, and went to and from school on a horse. Roy attended high school in Cass Lake, and then went to business school for a year. He worked in a Warroad fishery for a year and then a Crookston dairy until the fall of 1940 when he went to Newfoundland. He came back and was drafted into the Navy in May, 1943 and sent to the Pacific area.
Roy was assigned to a new destroyer, the USS McCord, which was assigned as flagship of destroyer squadron 47 in the U. S. Pacific Fleet. From the time of its departure from the United States until its return on July 9, 1945, the McCord participated in almost every major engagement against the enemy. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Area Service Ribbon and 12 Battle Stars. Serving one's country was a natural following in Roy's family, as he had two uncles who fought in World War I. His two brothers also served in World War II.
When he returned to civilian life 1n 1945, Roy went to Bemidji Business College, and then went into the surplus store business with his brother in Detroit Lakes. They opened another surplus store in Crookston, sold the Detroit Lakes Store and opened another one in Breckenridge in 1947 which was located on Minnesota Avenue. They owned and operated the surplus store until 1967. In 1965 they started the laundromat business in Breckenridge, Wahpeton, Baudette and Roseau. They also went into the vending business until selling out in the mid 1980's.
Roy was married to Christine Maxine Murphy on September 19, 1959 at Breckenridge Lutheran Church. They always made their home in Breckenridge.
He was a member of Breckenridge Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He was also active with the Wilkin County Honor Guard, the Veterans of Foreign Wars #2766 (a life member), the American Legion Post #53, Military Order of Cooties Pup Tent #3, Eagles Club Aerie 2749, and the World War II Last Man's Club. He enjoyed caning chairs, flea markets, craft shows and working crossword puzzles; and always loved visiting with family and friends.
