Quinton Allen Halvorson, 71, of Wahpeton, ND, passed away on March 28, 2015, at CHI St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, MN. There will be a grave side service at Tingvold Lutheran Cemetery in rural Underwood, MN, at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 23. Pastor Nancy Monke will be officiating.
Quinton was born in Fergus Falls, MN, on May 20, 1943, the son of Morris and Lenora (Bjorgo) Halvorson. When he was just a toddler, Quinton's father lost his life in the WWII, Battle of the Bulge. His mother then married John Anderson and he raised Quinton as his own.
In 1962, Quinton enlisted in the US Navy serving his first deployment during the Vietnam War on an aircraft carrier called the USS Oriskany. Upon completion of his first tour, he made the decision to become a career Navy man. In his nearly three decades of service, Quinton was stationed at several locations, including Holy Loch, Scotland on a submarine tender- the USS Canopus, and on the USS Claude V Ricketts, in Norfolk, VA. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (with 4 stars), the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, US Coast Guard Special Operations Services Ribbon, and 5 Good Conduct Medals. Quinton was supported by the love of his life, Laura RW Shaw, as they celebrated over 20 years of marriage together. After his retirement from the military in 1989, Quinton worked at Sears and FedEx while living in Fredericksburg, VA with his family. He eventually moved to Wahpeton to be closer to his eldest daughter, Amber.
Quinton will be deeply missed by his children, Amber (Bill) Halvorson, Summer (Rick) Gillespie, Skye (Steven) Halvorson, and Tamsin (Gary) Halvorson; his step-children, Donna and Ricky; his grandchildren, Lotus, Arabella, Alyssa, Brandon, Vanilla, and Eva; his sister, Joyce (Daryl) Trites; his brothers, Roger (Pam) Anderson, and Jeffrey Anderson; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Lenora; and his step-father, John Anderson.
