Marvin Bakken

June 23, 1924 — September 10, 2017

Marvin K. Bakken, age 93, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2017, at St. Catherine’s Living Center in Wahpeton, ND.  The funeral will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Breckenridge Lutheran Church. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM, at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Pastor Mark Manning will be officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Breckenridge.

Marvin Kenneth Bakken was born on June 23, 1924, in rural Fosston, MN, to Louis and Amanda (Olson) Bakken. He attended Moen Country School in Fosston, and went on to obtain college courses in Engineering and Emergency Services from Dunwood Institute. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed in San Diego and Pearl Harbor; he was honorably discharged in 1946. Marvin was united in marriage to Harriet Volden on January 6, 1951, and from this union the couple had three children.

Marvin worked for the Polk County Highway Department in the engineering department. In 1966, he became employed by the Wilkin County Highway Department and served as the Wilkin County Assistant Highway Engineer until his retirement in 1987. He served as Wilkin County Civil Defense Director from 1974 to 1981, on the Port Authority Board for 4 years, and was also a Certified Bridge Inspector for the State of Minnesota in Wilkin County.

Marvin enjoyed fishing, hunting, going to rummage sales, and tinkering with motors and engines. He cherished the time that he spent on vacation with his family at Rush Lake, MN, Branson, MO, the Black Hills, and Yellowstone. Marvin was known for being honest, fair to everybody, and helpful in any way that he could be.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Harriet, of Breckenridge; his children: Julie (Thomas) Eder, of West Fargo, ND, and Steven (Melissa) Bakken, of Breckenridge; his grandchildren: Justin Eder (son, Brayton), Jason (Amanda) Eder (children, Lydia and Heath), Kristen (Wes) Mueller (children, Erin, Kaydence, and Coltyn), Ashley (Paul) Deal, Jessica (Shawn) Paschke (children, Oliver and Ryan Amelia), Tyler Bakken (Kaylee Ward), Amy Bakken, Nicholis (Katie) Jaeb (children, Lilia, Oliver, and Maverick), Jennifer Jaeb (Nathan Randall) (children, Morgan, Logan, and Lucinda), Cierra Meisch; his siblings: Lorraine Svedahl, of Fosston, MN, Irving Bakken, of Frazee, MN, Linda (Harvey) Jorgenson, of Erskine, MN; Sisters-in-law, Arlene (Kenny) Wold, of Fosston, Linda Bakken, of North Branch, MN; several nieces and nephews, and Special friends, loyal to the end, Beryl and Audrey Osmundson, of Breckenridge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sherilynn Meisch; his brothers, Lowell Bakken, Allen Bakken; his brother-in-law, Manfred Svedahl; and his sister-in-law, Ruby Bakken.
