Lloyd “Punky” Hingst Sr., 81, of Wahpeton, ND, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, October 8, 2019. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton.
Lloyd, affectionately known as “Punky,” was born in Great Bend, ND, on October 20, 1937, to Lloyd and Irene (Bohn) Hingst. He grew up in the Great Bend area and later attended Wahpeton High School during his freshman and sophomore years. He then attended Breckenridge High School in his junior year, and in 1955, he graduated high school in Hopkins, MN. He continued his formal education at the Trade Institute of Chicago for two years, obtaining an associate degree in drafting and estimating.
Lloyd joined the United States Marine Corps and was in active duty at Camp Pendleton, CA from 1956 to 1959. He then was on inactive duty from 1959 to 1962 and ultimately was discharged as a Sargent. For the next nine years, he worked as a foreman for Meide Construction in Wahpeton.
On May 29, 1961, Punky was united in marriage to Carole Melcher at Waubay, SD, and from that marriage, he was blessed with two children, Lloyd Jr., and Kally.
Punky enjoyed working at Meide Construction but an entrepreneur at heart, he decided to start his own operation, Hingst Construction, Breckenridge. He owned and operated his business for 16 years, until May of 1984, when he retired due to a brain aneurysm.
Hunting was Punky’s favorite hobby, he enjoyed deer hunting but especially loved moose and bear hunting in Canada and Alaska. Trapping and buying furs were also among his favorite hobbies. In his younger days, he and Carole always looked forward to dancing any opportunity they got. He could also be found enjoying his day listening to golf, “Wheel of Fortune,” “The Price Is Right,” and “Jeopardy.” Paul Harvey was among his favorites to listen to when he wasn’t tuned into the Twins games or his favorite old country music. Above all, he cherished visiting with his friends and neighbors and spent as much time sitting outside his apartment watching the hustle and bustle in the neighborhood.
Punky will be greatly missed by his daughter, Kally (John) Glander of Wahpeton, ND, and their child, Breinne (Justin) Schlagel and their child, Thomas, of Britton, SD; daughter-in-law, Janet McMullen of Fargo, ND, and her son, Chad (Kate) Hingst (son of Lloyd Jr.) and unborn child due in November, of Okinawa, Japan; two brothers, Roger Hingst of Minot, ND, and Lee (Edna) Hingst of Silver Lake, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Irene Hingst; son, Lloyd Jr.; sister, Marcie Tehle; brother-in-law, Richard Tehle; and sister-in-law, Tish Hingst.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge.
