Ione Marie Johnson was born in Breckenridge, MN, on May 24, 1941, one of three children born to Ralph and Viola (Beaudin) Johnson. She attended a two-room school in Kent, MN, through the eighth grade then attended Breckenridge High School and graduated in 1959. Following high school, Ione worked as a nurse's aide at St. Francis Medical Center in Breckenridge for two years. She then attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND, and graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1963.
On September 19, 1963, Ione was united in marriage to David Meyer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Breckenridge. She was employed at St. Francis Medical Center until 1967. She then joined the Richland County Health Department in Wahpeton, ND and worked 42 years at a job she truly loved. Part of her job description was to do immunizations at local schools and to do home visits. Her compassion for her patients was paralleled by kindness and benevolence. She was affectionately known as the "shot lady" to children and adults and it was her mission in life to help keep people well. In 2002, Ione received the Worker of the Year Award from the North Dakota Public Health Association, of which she was a lifetime member.
After her retirement in 2009, Ione continued to volunteer with flu vaccinations and remained active in the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, the NDPHA, and St. John's Church as long as her health allowed. She was an avid reader, loved playing bingo, and quilting. To say that she had a passion for butterflies is an understatement, as evidenced by the décor in her home, car, and yard. In her younger years, Ione enjoyed bowling and fishing with David, playing softball and bicycling with friends, and riding her scooter.
Ione will be missed by her sister, Jeane (Warren) Gast of Kent, MN; her three nieces, Karen (Brad) Lehmann of Breckenridge, Jolisa (Adam) Jenstead of Sabin, MN, and Linda Johnson of Ramsey, MN; several great-nieces and nephews; many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Viola; her husband, David; a brother, Robert Johnson; and a niece, Diane Rosenau.
