Helen Agnes Peterson, 93, of Alexandria, MN, formerly of Breckenridge, MN, passed away on May 23, 2016, at Ecuman Bethany Nursing Home in Alexandria. The visitation will be from 5 to 8:00 PM, on Thursday, May 26, at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge with a prayer service at 7:00. The visitation will continue from 9:00 to 9:30 AM, on Friday, May 27, at the funeral home, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Breckenridge. Father Joseph Backowski will be the Celebrant. The interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Breckenridge.
Helen was born on August 31, 1922, in Tintah, MN, one of four children born to Louis and Anna (Koziol) Pogreba. After graduating from Tintah High School in 1940, Helen pursued her nursing degree at St. Francis School of Nursing in Breckenridge. On June 28, 1946, she was united in marriage to Sidney Peterson in Sydney, MT. The couple made their home in Morris, MN for ten years and then they moved to Breckenridge. Helen joined the RN staff at St. Francis Hospital. Several years later, she was hired as a public health nurse for Richland County of North Dakota where she remained until her retirement in the early 1980's. Sidney passed away on July 21, 1994, and then in the spring of 1996, she moved to an apartment in Glenwood, MN. Eventually Helen moved to Lakeview Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Glenwood and most recently resided at Bethany Nursing Home in Alexandria, MN.
During her younger years, Helen enjoyed going dancing with Sidney. She loved to pass the time playing cards with friends, crocheting, or reading a good book. She looked forward to family gatherings and especially loved her role as grandmother and great-grandmother.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Eileen (Donald) McCrory of Glenwood, MN; her two sons, Keith Peterson of Rapid City, SD, and Kirk (special friend, Stephanie) Peterson of Breckenridge; two grandchildren, Leah (Kevin) Nelson and Benjamin McCrory and two great-granddaughters, Norah and Annie Nelson. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Anna; her husband, Sidney; her sisters, Regina Rowe and Marcella Pogreba; and her brother, Leo Pogreba.
