Calvin Kent Courbat, 62, of Nashua, MN, passed away at Pioneer Care in Fergus Falls, MN, on August 16, 2016. The funeral will be at 2:00 PM, on Monday, August 22, at the chapel in Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge, MN. The visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Pastor David Strom will be officiating.
Calvin was born in Morris, Minnesota, on June 7, 1954, one of five children born to Floyd and Dorothy (Johnson) Courbat. During his formative years, he often wintered in Florida with his family so he was educated in both Minnesota and Florida. Following his graduation from Tintah High School in 1972, Calvin attended Wadena Technical College in their Mechanics program. He was hired as mechanic and farm laborer for Don and Mary Morgan then transitioned with the farm when their son, Tom, and wife, Christy, took over the family business. Calvin spent winters in Florida but it wasn't just for a vacation. Instead he started a small excavating business with his backhoe and helped people with landscaping and gardening projects. He was united in marriage Mary Heller on August 6, 2011, in Elbow Lake MN. Calvin recently retired due to health reasons.
Farming was in Calvin's blood and he was dearly loved by the Morgan family. They will remember him as a "brother" and loyal friend. Calvin enjoyed tending his large garden and selling his harvest at the Farmer's Market. He looked forward watching NASCAR and dog races and was always geared up for hosting Super Bowl parties in his home. Calvin loved a good Flea Market find, and bidding on the "treasures" at auction sales. He loved dogs and will be especially missed by his two loyal companions, Scooner and Dog.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Mary; his sisters, Karen (LeLand) Sperr of Wheaton, MN and Janeice (Ken) Raiche of Largo, FL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Dorothy; his siblings, Judith Courbat and Rodney Courbat; and nephews, Brenden Sperr and David Sperr.
